Born and died in Trieste, Italian painter and member of the Slovenian community in Italy. In 1930 he was arrested for anti-fascism and send to exile to Accetura. During his exile years, he discovered his artistic talent. In 1934 he graduated from the Art School in Venice. During the Second World War, he participated in the anti-fascist movement and battles. After the war, he won several Biennale grand prizes in Venice and Ljubljana. In 1974 he won the highest artistic prize in Slovenia. Today there is museum dedicated for his life and work in Shtanjel (www.spacial.net)
Lojze Spacal visited Macedonia in the mid 1950s. He was a member of the committee for evaluating Macedonian cultural heritage. His appointed driver took him to visit several places, of which he was particularly impressed by the old monasteries in the Lake Ohrid area. The local medieval architecture, landscape and culture in general fascinated him. Later he often said that his experience of the Macedonian landscape had influenced his rediscovery of the Karst. (Kras in Slovenian, a place where Spacal devoted significant artistic attention.).
