Kurt Hielscher was one of the most famous German art photographers of his time. He was born in Striegau, Schlesien (Silesia, Poland) and died in Lichtenstein in Sachsen. He was a German language teacher in Spain during the first world war, where he made thousands of artistic photographs of Spanish landscapes. In the 1920s he started to travel around Europe and publish photographic books of his journeys: Germany (1924), Rome (1925), Italy (1925), Austria (1928), Yugoslavia (1926), Scandinavia (1932) and Romania (1933).
Kurt Hielscher visited Macedonia as a part of his Yugoslav journey in 1926, where he made marvelous photographs of Prilep, Ohrid, Skopje, Novo Selo, Kratovo, Stip, Veles, Kumanovo, Bardovci, Matka and Thessaloniki. These photographs are published in his book from 1926 called “Yugoslavia, landscape, architecture and life of people”.
