George Bain is referred as “the father of the modern Celtic design”. Born in Scrabster (Caithness), educated in Edinburg. In 1951 he wrote his most famous book “Celtic Art: The Methods of Creation”. In 1978, a retrospective exhibition of his work was held in Kirkcaldy. His collection is held by the Groam House Museum in Rosemarkie which helped organize a further exhibition on his life and work at the Royal Museum (Edinburgh) in 2001.
During the last two years of the First World War George Bain served in the Salonica campaign in the Royal Engineers unit. There he sketched and painted both landscapes and the people he met and worked with. This work is today in the collection of Groam House Museum (http://www.groamhouse.org.uk/index.asp?pageid=670965) . On his return he took up the position of Principal Teacher of Art at Kirkcaldy High School in Fife, remaining in this post until his retirement in 1946.
