Born in May 1st, 1876 in Gransee near New Ruppin, died in 1946 in Buenos Aires, Argentina. He lived in Wimpfen at Neckar since 1918 after many study trips and journeys. He studied decorative painting at the Art Academy in Dusseldorf since 1900 under guidance of professor Peter Janssen and since 1902 at the Art Academy in Berlin, under the guidance of G.L. Meyn and Arthur Kampf. He won grand state prize in 1908 for a study journey in Italy.
In the period between 1914-1918, Albert Gartmann was an official war painter in Russia and Macedonia. He has painted many Macedonian landscapes, cityscapes and war scenes, mainly following the movement of the German and Bulgarian armies. Many of his paintings have been published in the German war magazines.
Several painting with Macedonian motives have been sold via different European auction houses, for example “ Macedonian girl in traditional costume 1916” sold by the auction house Zofinger, Zofingen Switzerland on December 1st 2001 (lot number 2452)
