Born on 1 August 1880 born at Frome, Somerset, died on 22nd September in Kensington, London. Educated at the Merchant Venturers’ Technical College, Bristol. 1901-1906 studied etching and engraving under Sir Frank Short at Royal College of Art, South Kensington. He 1904 published his first etching. During World War I he served in Artists’ Rifles and 60th Division in France, Salonika and Palestine. After 1918 he was elected Associate Engraver of Royal Academy. In 1924 succeeded Sir. Franklin Short as the Head of the etching and engraving school when Short retired. In 1926 elected full member of the Royal Academy. Between 1938-1962 held the position of President Royal Society of Painter-Etchers and Engravers (now the Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers). In 1948 awarded Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE)
In 1956 elected Senior member of the Royal Academy.
Osborne made several etchings from Dojran region and Aegean Macedonia (Greece) which were published later in 1929 in series of books with title “Masters of Modern Etching” by publishing house “The Studio”. One example of this Macedonian period is the etching “Trekkers of the Plain near Doiran, Macedonia 1917”. A copy of this etching is in the collection of the author of this lexicon.
