Born in Reims on 18 May 1890, died in Fontenay-aux-Roses on 30 November 1970, Alexander Noll was well known French sculptor, painter and graphic designer. He is mainly known by his furniture creations, where he used different species of wood. His works of art can be found in the Museum of Modern Art in Paris , France.
Alexandre Noll visited Macedonia during the World War One period, where he was stationed in Thessaloniki. He created several drawings and oil paintings, for example the oil on canvas painting entitled: “Soleil levant a Salonique” painted in 1917, sold by the auction house Piasa, Paris for 1372 euro on 18.12.2000 (lot number: 58). Two woodcuts made in 1917 depicting city views of Thessaloniki were put on sale by the auction house Bonhams, London on 12.12.2019 ( lots number 4 and 5).
