Born in Krefeld on 27.1.1891, died in Hemmenhofen am Bodensee on 8.9.1936. Cousin of the famous German painter August Macke. Studied art with the Dutch artist Jan Thorn-Prikker (1868-1932) at the Krefeld School of Arts and Crafts. In 1910/11 he got in touch with the very progressive group of German artists that identified themselves under the name of “Blue Rider” and in 1912 he got in touch with another important art group called “The Bridge”.
Helmuth Macke visited Macedonia in the period 1915-1919 where he produced several remarkable expressionistic landscape watercolors from the Dojran lake and Dojran front. After the war, he lived in Krefeld and Bonn. In 1929 he won the Rome price, in this period he worked with Karl Rotluff-Schmidt (1884-1976) and Hendrik Campendonk (1889-1957). His works of art can be found in the Krefeld Art Museum, Hannover City Museum, Leipzig Museum, and Ahlen Art Museum.
Few Macedonian watercolors from Dojran front are “Landschaft Mazedonien 1918”, sold by auction house Geble, Radolfzell on 14.06.2008 (lot number 600) for 1800 euro, “Landschap Mazedonien 1918” signed and titled: “Dojran Juni 1918”, auction house Peter Karbstein, Dusseldorf, on 02.03.2002 (lot nr: 297), estimated on 5000 euro and “Mazedonische Küstenlandschaft am Doiran See 1918”, sold by the auction house Villa Grisebach, Berlin on 27.11.1993, (lot number : 186) for 6906 euro.
